VW Golf Mk.7 Brake Fluid Flush (How I Failed)

I decided to change brake fluid on my VW Golf MK7.

I've done it many times, it's not that difficult, right?

 

Right??

 

Well, I failed miserably and this is how I failed with cheesy Chinese tools.

 

 

 

 

IDK which sequence is correct;

- FrontLeft - FrontRight - RearLeft - RearRight

- PassRear - DrivRear - PassFront - DriFront

 

In case of ordinary cars, it's quite easy;

far side from the master reservoir first.

 

But Volkswagen is NOT a ordinary car brand.

From Reddit to Youtube, people suggested

[ FrontLeft - FrontRight - RearLeft - RearRight ] progressiom as "volkswagen procedure".

 

 

To make fresh fluid penetrate ABS module,

it is required to use pressurised pump.

 

Pressure - 1 or 1.5 bar ~ 2 Bar / 30 psi

 

Caliper Side / Wheel Side

Bleed Valve Size: 11mm

Bleed Valve Torque: IDK, snugg.

 

Lug Bolt Torque: 88 foot pound (120 nm)

Lug Bolt Size: 17mm (Shy off of 11/16th)

 

 

Tools I used:

- Flare Nut Wrench Set (Not a good option. Use regular ones)

- Socket set (11mm, 17mm)

- Rachet Wrench / Torque Wrench / Breaker Bar

- Pressure Pump 3L

- Torx Bit Set

- Dewalt 12V Impact Drivers & Adaptors

- Dewalt 12V Magnetic Light

- Scissor Jack (one came with car)

- Silicone Tube (extra)

- Soda Bottle with Hole on top

 

Other stuff also I used

- Nitrile Gloves, bunch of 'em

- Paper Towels, bunch of 'em

- Medium sized Cardboard Box (to absorb leakouts)

 

 

It costed me approx. USD 30 inc. shipping for this crap.

 

 

 

 

 

First thing first, let's open up the hood and get ready.

Wiped the reservoir near cap with a paper towel.

 

It was tight af. Seriously.

I grunted so much that almost bled feces in my pants.

 

Dried fitted first, to check this damn thing.

Because I DID NOT WANTED IT TO LEAK EVERYWHERE. Sigh.

Spoiler alert: it did, just like a teen with free corn collection in front of his desk with a bottle of J&J lotion.

 

 

Well it did hold up the 20 psi (dry run)

So I assumed it will do the job.

 

 

 

I removed wire & tube from intake manifold to make it easier.

 

 

 

Look at the dark cloudy dusty contamination. Probably brake dusts got in the system.

 

Filled pump with fresh fluid, pressurised, then connected.

Well it works, at least this far. I thought.

 

 

 

I didn't and don't have 11mm "normal" two end spanner.

 

So I tried to fit flare nut one.

Nope. It is almost not possible to fit it.

When you somehow manage to do it, you are not allowed to turn it.

 

 

 

Figured this abomination then realised that I can just use socket to crack it open.

Damn I am stupid.

 

Well seems fine, right?

(Yes I do see I hung the waste can on some hose. Later I did on coil)

I turned the nipple to let the pressure work iteself, only to watch old fluid creeps up so slowly.

 

WTF is wrong?

Thought it was automatic?

 

Waited five minutes to see a tiny puddle in the corner of this bottle,

while top is dripping oil every freaking place.

 

God damn cheap waste can.

 

 

I though it'd be stream tf out the fluid.

Changed the waste bottle with my makeshift one and

pumped the pedal few times.

 

Alright, looks good, but still no sign of pressurised oil streaming out. yet.

 

 

Is any hoses pinched somewhere?

Needed to check the engine room.

 

 

Um, did someone pee in here?

Why is there yellowish liquid in there?

 

Had to undo and remove intake manafold to check.

 

Some of brake fluid had came down there and made a puddle.

What the fuck..?

 

 

While empting the pump back into oil bottle, I saw some flakes of plastic came out.

 

There were bunch more in the pump.

 

 

I was furious.

Well gotta finish up the job fast and cleanup the engine room then, I thought.

 

Put the cap back on, turned it tight as much as I can do with my hand,

 

Washed couple times with new fluid from first bottle, then filled with second new bottle.

Pumped it up to 30 psi (2 bar) then

 

 

connect.

 

 

I heard a sound like a liquid shooting punctured radiator.

 

Oil was pouring out at the cap, at the joint point of cap and L shaped metal tube.

 

omfg.

 

 

 

Immediately pulled the tube out,

and checked the engine room and undercover.

 

It was dripping. a lot. of fluid.

 

 

Pulled out second jack and supported at the bushing

since it was deathwish to go under only supported with one jack.

 

 

 

Took this picture after the cleanup.

The whole transmission and other body frames were soggy wet.

 

 

 

Would you look at this fucking mess.

 

Took me two hours to wipe down most of it.

There were so many nooks and crannies hard to reach with my hand.

 

Hate my life.

Did and still do.

 

 

 

 

Flushed with good old method, and it worked at least.

 

Pump the pedal dozen times, fill up the reservoir,

check the waste can and move on.

You know.

 

 

I'm gonna "change", not "flush", brake fluid every year then.

Replacing large portion will keep the system good enough.

 

 

 

 

Fuck you German engineering, for making me do this,

Fuck you South Korean car manufacturer, for merely existing,

Fuck you Chingchong engineering, for giving me a bum one.

 

Fuck all of yall.
